In recent years, IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs) have been widely deployed, and more and more mobile devices have built-in WLAN interfaces. However, WLAN employs the carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) medium access control (MAC) protocol, which consumes a significant portion of the energy resources of a mobile device. Hence, minimizing the energy consumption of the WLAN interface in mobile devices has recently attracted considerable interest in both academia and industry. This article provides a survey and an experimental study of the energy consumption issues and energy-efficient technologies of the MAC protocol in IEEE 802.11 WLAN. 2010 Elsevier B.V. Efficient MAC strategies for the IEEE 802.11n wireless LANs

Current IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) standard products can provide up to 54 Mbps raw transmission rate, while non-standard WLAN products with 108 Mbps have already appeared in the market, and the next generation WLAN will provide much higher transmission rates. However, the medium access control (MAC) was designed for lower data rates, such as 1–2 Mbps, and it is not an effici...

Performance of Reliable Transport Protocol over IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN: Analysis and Enhancement

IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control(MAC) is proposed to support asynchronous and time bounded delivery of radio data packets in infrastructure and ad hoc networks. The basis of the IEEE 802.11 WLAN MAC protocol is Distributed Coordination Function(DCF), which is a Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance(CSMA/CA) with binary slotted exponential back-off scheme. Since IEEE 802.11 MAC...

Impact of IEEE 802.11n/ac PHY/MAC High Throughput Enhancements over Transport/Application Layer Protocols - A Survey

Since the inception of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) in the year 1997, it has tremendously grown in the last few years. IEEE 802.11 is popularly known as WLAN. To provide the last mile wireless broadband connectivity to users, IEEE 802.11 is enriched with IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.11g. More recently, IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11ac and IEEE 802.11ad are introduced with enhancem...

Performance modeling of asynchronous data transfer methods of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol

To satisfy the needs of wireless data networking, study group 802.11 was formed under IEEE project 802 to recommend an international standard for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). A key part of standard are the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol needed to support asynchronous and time bounded delivery of data frames. It has been proposed that unslotted Carrier Sense Multiple Access with C...

Modeling an Energy-Efficient MAC Layer Protocol

In wireless adhoc networks, channel and energy capacities are scarce resources. In our previous work we proposed BLAM, a new energy aware MAC layer enhancement for the IEEE 802.11 protocol to save the energy and channel capacity wasted in collisions. In this paper we introduce a collision model to analytically compare BLAM to the IEEE 802.11. Using this model we provide worst-case and best-case...
